With Google Fiber beginning to make a big push into new demographics we are beginning to see the current crop of Internet Service Providers alter their marketing methodology and even dropping some of their prices in some coverage areas. Even Frontier CT has begun offering cheaper local packages for new customer. This might leave current customers high and dry which is unfortunate but it’s going to take baby step for us to really see the changes that are necessary in the industry. The cable companies are a fine example of the consumer wagging the dog as they have pushed for decades now for changes.
It might have taken the FCC finally stepping in to make those changes happen which, to me, is an unfortunate matter. It baffles me to no end that they would be willing to ignore their own customers for so long. It’s consumer demand that drives business and for them to actively defy the wishes of the consumer speaks of the level of arrogance that they possess. Did they honestly believe that lining the pockets of congress would win them out in the end when it is the American people who are their customers and the ones that give them the business they need.
They’ve done everything that they could to stifle the growth of technology because of their conflicting interests. Now that the Internet Service Providers also have a controlling, if not the only controlling, interest in cable television it’s really no surprise that they would attempt to bury high speed FiOS while avoiding rolling out cheaper, higher speeds for their customers. Streaming technology has done a lot in taking the breath out of the industry and as more Americans choose to disconnect their cable services in favor of streaming services like Netflix, they’re only going to fight more.
